How to train Slayer efficiently

Slayer is a long-term skill that rewards patience and planning. Efficiency comes from choosing the right master for your level, bringing the correct gear and reducing downtime. At lower levels prioritize tasks that are quick to kill and near bank or teleport options. As you progress, focus on tasks with the best XP/hour and favorable drop tables — this often means switching to higher-tier masters.

Daily routine and planning

For a predictable training session, plan 2–3 hour blocks where you stick to a single task. Bring food and potions for the whole session, and pre-place teleport tablets or runes to reduce walking time. If you use a cannon, set it up at multi-target spawns and keep extra ammo nearby so you spend more time killing than restocking.

Gear and consumables

Gear choice depends on the task. Melee tasks benefit from high-accuracy weapons and a strong strength bonus; ranged tasks need high Ranged accuracy and the right ammo type. Always bring an anti-fire potion for dragons and a specific protection prayer or switch when mechanics demand it. A Slayer Helmet or Black Mask provides a consistent damage/accuracy boost and should be used whenever you have it.

Training methods and XP rates

XP rates vary widely depending on level, gear and task. Beginner methods (low level) give modest XP rates but are cheap. Mid-level methods with good masters and simple tasks can yield tens of thousands of XP per hour. Endgame methods with superb gear and efficient task selection are where 60k–80k+ XP/hour become possible. Use our Skill Calculator and XP Calculator to estimate time-to-goal based on your personal actions/hour and gear.

Common pitfalls

  • Ignoring your slayer block list and wasting time on tasks you dislike.
  • Poor inventory setup that causes frequent trips to the bank.
  • Underestimating travel time between spawns and not using teleports.
  • Not leveraging shortcuts (house teleport, mounts) to reduce downtime.
