How to Get Barrows Gloves
Barrows gloves have one source: finish every chapter of Recipe for Disaster, then buy them for 130,000 coins from the Culinaromancer's Chest in the Lumbridge Castle cellar. They are not a drop and not tradeable, so the whole task is quest work — 175 quest points, thirteen skill requirements, and six bosses you have to kill without Prayer.
Skip if: You’re building a 1 Defence pure. The required quest chain hands out unavoidable Defence XP, and the lowest Defence level you can reach the gloves with is 35.

104k with Elite Lumbridge & Draynor
Agility and Thieving aren’t boostable
- Only source: the Culinaromancer’s Chest in the Lumbridge Castle cellar, after all ten parts of Recipe for Disaster. 130,000 coins, or 104,000 once the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary discounts the whole chest by 20%.
- Partial credit exists. Each subquest you finish unlocks the next tier of Culinaromancer’s gloves, so an unfinished quest still leaves you something wearable.
- No Defence requirement to equip — but the quests themselves give Defence XP, so 35 Defence is the realistic floor.
Buying them is also a Hard Lumbridge & Draynor Diary task, and Falo the Bard asks for them on the “strangely found in a chest” clue.
These are the combined levels for Recipe for Disaster and everything it forces you to complete. Nothing here is optional if you want the gloves.
| Skill | Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking | 70 | Awowogei’s dish — boostable with orange spicy stew |
| Magic | 59 | Boostable |
| Fishing | 53 | Boostable |
| Thieving | 53 | Not boostable — Desert Treasure I |
| Firemaking | 50 | Boostable |
| Mining | 50 | Boostable |
| Agility | 48 | Not boostable — Ape Atoll for Awowogei |
| Crafting | 40 | Boostable |
| Ranged | 40 | Not boostable |
| Smithing | 40 | Boostable |
| Woodcutting | 36 | Boostable |
| Herblore | 25 | Boostable |
| Fletching | 10 | Boostable |
Do the Evil Dave subquest before Awowogei: it unlocks orange spicy stew, which swings Cooking by up to 5 levels and gets you into the 70 Cooking dish from 65. Plan the grinds with the skill calculator.
- The finale needs 175 quest points. RFD’s own parts give 9 before it, and the required quest chain gives 79 — so roughly 87 QP has to come from quests RFD never asks for.
- The Sir Amik Varze subquest already needs 107 QP because you have to start Legends’ Quest, so the questing happens well before the boss gauntlet.
- Short easy quests are the cheapest QP per hour here. Import your hiscores into the quest requirements checker to see what you can start right now.
- Legends’ Quest — started only. You need 107 QP and its full quest chain (Family Crest, Heroes’ Quest, Shilo Village, Underground Pass, Waterfall Quest), but you only have to reach Kharazi Jungle. Don’t train to Legends’ own 45 Herblore / 50 Crafting / 50 Smithing / 50 Woodcutting / 50 Strength — RFD’s lower levels are enough.
- Desert Treasure I. 53 Thieving, 50 Magic, 50 Firemaking, 10 Slayer (or a gas mask from Plague City), plus The Dig Site, Temple of Ikov, The Tourist Trap, Troll Stronghold, Priest in Peril and Waterfall Quest. The single biggest block of work.
- Monkey Madness I. Required for Awowogei, and you need gorilla, ninja and zombie greegrees — bring ~3,000 coins if you still have to make them.
- Horror from the Deep (after Alfred Grimhand’s Barcrawl) is the other finale gate. Cheap by comparison.
Subquests can be done in any order and you can have several open at once. Each gives 1 quest point and a glove tier.
| Subquest | Gates | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Freeing the Mountain Dwarf | Fishing Contest. Kill a level 13 Icefiend unless you own ice gloves. | 1,000 Cooking + 1,000 Slayer XP |
| Freeing the Goblin generals | Goblin Diplomacy. No combat. | 1,000 Cooking + 1,000 Farming + 1,000 Crafting XP |
| Freeing Pirate Pete | 31 Cooking. Kill five level 30/31 mudskippers and a crab underwater. | 1,000 XP in Cooking, Crafting, Fishing, Smithing + Mogre Camp access |

Evil Dave’s spice puzzle is the one people get stuck on — feed it to the Dave’s stew solver instead of guessing doses.
Prayer is disabled for every fight, but you can leave and restock between kills without losing progress. Bring high-healing food, restores for Karamel, and ice gloves for Flambeed.
| Boss | Level | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Agrith-Na-Na | 146 | Melee or Ranged in dragonhide. |
| Flambeed | 149 | Water spells and Snare. He unequips your weapon unless you wear ice gloves. |
| Karamel | 136 | Fire spells from melee distance. She drains stats constantly — bring 2+ restores. |
| Dessourt | 121 | Air spells, Iban Blast or Ranged. Snare helps. |
| Gelatinnoth Mother | 130 | She cycles forms: bring runes for all four elemental spells plus a melee and a Ranged weapon. Favour Ranged defence. |
| Culinaromancer | 75 | Hit him with whatever is strongest. His magic attack lands at a flat 1-in-3 rate, so Magic defence is irrelevant. |
Deaths here are instanced: unprotected items go to a grave outside, but anything already dropped on the floor is gone. Check your setup in the DPS calculator if you’re unsure about the no-prayer damage.
| Subquests done | Best gloves you can buy |
|---|---|
| 0 (feast watched) | Hardleather gloves |
| 1 | Bronze gloves |
| 2 | Iron gloves |
| 3 | Steel gloves |
| 4 | Black gloves |
| 5 | Mithril gloves |
| 6 | Adamant gloves |
| 7 | Rune gloves |
| 8 | Dragon gloves |
| All 8 + Culinaromancer killed | Barrows gloves |
Dragon gloves cost the same 130,000 coins as Barrows gloves and are strictly worse, so don’t buy them if the finale is your next step. Rune gloves at seven subquests are the sensible stopgap.
- Second-best melee gloves behind ferocious gloves, second-best Ranged behind zaryte vambraces, and third for Magic behind the tormented bracelet and confliction gauntlets. For 130k that is close to best-in-slot in three styles at once.
- That matters most where you switch styles mid-fight — Dagannoth Kings, Royal Titans, most Slayer tasks — because one glove slot covers everything.
- Finishing RFD also gives the cellar bank chest, the Culinaromancer’s food and kitchen weaponry shops, and puts all six RFD bosses into the Nightmare Zone pool.
- They turn into 78,000 coins on a PvP death, so they aren’t a free-to-lose Wilderness item.
- Can I buy them without the finale? No. Eight subquests caps you at dragon gloves.
- Do I need 175 QP for the subquests? No — only the Culinaromancer fight. Sir Amik Varze needs 107 QP.
- Can I boost the Cooking requirement? Yes, orange spicy stew covers up to 5 levels. Agility, Thieving and Ranged can’t be boosted for this quest.
- Cheaper than 130k?Only via the Elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary (104,000). There’s no other discount and no tradeable version.
