Skilling Money Making

High Alchemy — Margin Hunting, Not A Fixed Method

High Level Alchemy turns an item into a fixed coin amount. You profit when GE buy price + nature rune cost stays under that alch value. There is no permanent “best alchable” list — undercutting and nature price swings erase margins overnight. This is Magic training that sometimes pays; treat it as arbitrage, not a boss.

Skip if: you want a set-and-forget GP/hr number, or you will not check live GE prices before buying thousands of items.

Requirements

Hard gates

  • 55 Magic for High Level Alchemy
  • Nature runes — one per cast (main variable cost)
  • Fire runes or a staff that provides fire (staff of fire / mystic fire / tome of fire)
  • Cash to buy a test stack of alchables from the GE

Recommended

  • Staff of fire (or better) — never buy fire runes for alching
  • Rune pouch if you somehow need extra runes; usually natures + fire staff is enough
  • Explorer's ring free Low Alchs are unrelated to high-alch profit — ignore for this method
  • Alch calculator + GE Tracker open while buying
Route / Method
  1. Open the alch calculator. Sort by profit after nature cost. Ignore wiki nostalgia lists.
  2. Check real instant-buy price on the GE (not mid). Compare to high-alch value − nature cost.
  3. Buy 50–200 of the item. Confirm they fill. Alch the test stack. Confirm coins match expected margin.
  4. If margin holds, scale up. Cast High Alch on a 5-tick cycle: spell → item → repeat. Bank coins when inventory is cluttered.
  5. When buy offers stop filling or profit goes negative, drop the item. Rotate to the next positive line.

Typical categories that rotate in and out: yew longbows, various rune equipment, battlestaves, and other high-alch mid-items. Competition is fierce on anything the calculator highlights for long.

Inputs & costs
  • Buy: alchable items + nature runes
  • Do not buy: fire runes if you have a fire staff
  • Output:coins equal to the item's high-alch value — no GE sell tax on alch coins
  • Compare to flipping: sometimes selling on the GE after GE tax beats alching; sometimes alching wins because you skip the sell wait

Nature rune spikes can wipe an entire category of alchables in one day. Recalculate when natures move.

Profit

Per cast: high alch value − GE buy − nature cost. Throughput is capped by cast speed (~1,000–1,200/hr when focused). There is no unique RNG — variance is whether you can actually buy the item at the assumed price.

  • 5–20 GP/cast only works if volume fills instantly
  • Negative margin = pure Magic XP training; still valid if that is your goal
  • Paper profit on mid-price means nothing if offers sit for hours
  • Alching converts capital to coins without a sell listing — useful when GE is clogged
Efficiency tips
  • Always fire staff — inventory slot and cost both matter
  • Test 100 items before buying 10k
  • Bank near GE so you can pivot items without a teleport tax on time
  • F2P has fewer alchables; members markets are where thin margins usually live
  • If two items show similar profit, pick the one with deeper buy volume
  • Do not alch and flip the same stack — pick one exit
Common mistakes
  • Using guide price instead of what you actually pay
  • Forgetting nature cost in the margin math
  • Buying fire runes with a fire staff in the bank
  • Holding a dead alchable because "it was good last week"
  • Assuming 1,200 casts/hr while watching YouTube at half attention
