Complete OSRS Crafting Guide for 1-99
Crafting is one of OSRS's most versatile skills, offering both fast training methods and profitable alternatives. Whether you want to rush 99 with dragonhide bodies or make steady profit with daily battlestaves and gem cutting, this guide covers all proven methods used by efficient players in 2026.
Why Train Crafting?
Crafting is essential for several reasons: (1) Slayer rings (75 Crafting) provide unlimited teleports to slayer locations, saving massive time; (2) Zenyte jewelry (98 Crafting) includes anguish and tormented bracelet, BiS gear for ranged and magic; (3) Achievement diary requirements (85 for Karamja Elite); (4) Daily profit from battlestaves (100-300k/day with Varrock diary); (5) Gem cutting profitfor passive income.
Dragonhide Bodies: The Standard Method
Dragonhide bodies are the most popular training method from 63-99. You craft bodies from 3 pieces of dragonhide leather (tanned hides) using needle and thread. Green d'hide bodies (63-71) give 186 XP and ~300k XP/hr.Blue (71-77) gives 210 XP and ~350k XP/hr. Red (77-84) gives 234 XP and ~400k XP/hr.Black (84-99) gives 258 XP and ~450k XP/hr. Total cost from 63-99 is 30-50M GP depending on GE prices. This method is click-intensive but very fast.
Battlestaves: Daily Profit Method
Starting at 54 Crafting, you can buy battlestaves from Zaff in Varrock daily. The number you can buy increases with Varrock diary completion: 15 (base), 30 (Easy), 60 (Medium), 120 (Hard), 120 (Elite). Buy battlestaves for ~7k each, craft air orbs at the Air Obelisk (requires 66 Magic), attach orbs to staves, and sell air battlestaves for ~9-10k each.Profit is 100k/day (15 staves) to 300k+/day (120 staves with Elite). Takes 2-5 minutes per day. This is one of the best daily activities in OSRS.
Profitable Alternatives: Gem Cutting and Orb Running
If you prefer making money while training, gem cutting is a viable option. Cutting diamonds (55 Crafting, 107.5 XP each) and dragonstones (55, 137.5 XP) can be profitable (50-200 GP/gem) depending on market prices. It's slower XP (50-100k/hr) but very AFK and mobile-friendly. Air orb running (66 Crafting + 66 Magic) involves making unpowered orbs and charging them at the Air Obelisk. This gives 50-70k XP/hr and 500k-1M profit/hr. Slower than dragonhide but great for ironmen or players on a budget.
Early Levels: Quests vs Manual Training
For levels 1-20, the fastest method is completing Elemental Workshop I quest, which gives 5k Crafting XP (instant level 20). If you prefer training manually, make leather gloves or boots from cowhide (tan at Al Kharid tanner). This costs ~100k to level 20 and takes 30-60 minutes. From 20-54, you can cut sapphires/emeralds for budget training (~500k to 54) or make gold jewelry for faster XP (~2M to 54). Most players do quests for early XP to save money.
Cost-Efficient vs Fast Training
Cost-efficient path: Quests (1-20), gem cutting (20-63), air orb running (66-99). Total cost ~5-10M GP but takes 40-60 hours. Fast path: Quests (1-20), gold jewelry (20-54), dragonhide bodies (63-99). Total cost ~40-60M GP but only takes 20-40 hours. Most players choose the fast path and supplement costs with daily battlestaves for profit.
Essential Milestones
Key levels to target: 54 for battlestaves (daily profit), 63 for green d'hide bodies(fast training begins), 66 for air orbs (profitable method), 75 for slayer rings (teleports),84 for black d'hide bodies (best XP), 85 for Karamja Elite diary, 93 for amethyst crafting (bolt tips for ranged), and 98 for zenyte jewelry (BiS gear). Most players prioritize 75 for slayer rings as it saves significant time during slayer training.
